Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace

"I like to think (and
the sooner the better!)
of a cybernetic meadow
where mammals and computers
live together in mutually
programming harmony
like pure water
touching clear sky.

I like to think
(right now, please!)
of a cybernetic forest
filled with pines and electronics
where deer stroll peacefully
past computers
as if they were flowers
with spinning blossoms.

I like to think
(it has to be!)
of a cybernetic ecology
where we are free of our labors
and joined back to nature,
returned to our mammal
brothers and sisters,
and all watched over
by machines of loving grace.”

Oh no. R.I.P. MCA. I grew up listening to the Beastie Boys, they were a big part of why I grew to love music. Genuinely gutted.

Here is the first video from ‘Paralytic Stalks’, directed by Jesse Ewles. Easily one of the best tracks of the year so far. Here’s hoping of Montreal will be rolling out some more videos soon.

There is very little I’m looking forward to than a new Dirty Projectors album, and the first single has firmly cemented my excitement for it. Give it a few listens, it’s stunning. I’ll be eagerly anticipating ‘Swing Lo Magellan’ on Domino, July 9.

Here is the first video from ‘Ghostory’. I’m really enjoying the recent School of Seven Bells album. Benjamin Curtis’ production chops are getting stronger, the blend of shoegaze and electronics build some truly stunning textures on these tracks. Claudia’s harmonies are surely missed after her departure but Alejandra’s laser-guided vocals are as beautiful as ever.

Here is a video for the Malkin Jewel fan competition made by my pal Dylan and my acquaintance Pats (he is not my friend). I’m sure they’d appreciate any youtube ‘Likes’ you could throw their way for this wonky old puppet nonsense. It’s genuinely quite charming and you get to listen to new Mars Volta. Win-win.

As expected, I am mightily impressed with the latest Andrew Bird LP, ‘Break it Yourself’. I just cannot recommend this guy’s music enough. Give it a go.

I have nothing but time for this Dumbo Gets Mad/Venice collaboration. It’s fuzzy psychedelic pop with a spliced up video. Wild stuff. Let’s hope these guys find more time to work together because I am loving this.

I’m really digging the new Sharon Van Etten video. It’s stunning. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the song is great too.

Mark Linkous died two years ago today, sadly. For those who don’t know, he was an incredibly talented multi-instrumentalist who collaborated with all the greats, and he recorded some truly beautiful albums on his farm by himself. Time to go listen to Sparklehorse. We’ll not see his like again.

Happy birthday to Ira Glass, host of ‘This American Life’ and all around gentleman. He is always interesting, always a pleasure to listen to and is one of my favorite people in all the world. Now, raise a glass.
