Happy birthday to Ira Glass, host of ‘This American Life’ and all around gentleman. He is always interesting, always a pleasure to listen to and is one of my favorite people in all the world. Now, raise a glass.

Protests are effective, that’s why the Iraq War never happened.

Well it seems to me that TV wannabes are stuck slap bang in the middle of a great big barn dance of arseholes. In one corner you’ve got TV itself chewing them up, using them as cheap cannon fodder, in the other you’ve got the general public who seems to love to cackle at their broken dreams, and then you’ve got people like me going “what’s it all about, BBC4?” Who’s the biggest arsehole in the room? I ask you, like an arsehole.

Jean is shorter than Brutus but taller than Imhotep. Imhotep is taller than Jean, but shorter than Lord Scotland. Lord Scotland is twice the height of Jean and Brutus combined but only one-tenth of the height of Millsy. Millsy is at a constant height of x − y. If Jean stands exactly one nautical mile away from Lord Scotland, how tall is Imhotep?

Did anyone in the audience know anyone who owned a hat? Yes? Excellent, so there we are. That’s proved already I have an uncanny ability to commune with the dead, or at least make loose statements that are easily applicable to many different people. It’s a gift.

The modern world is better than the Middle Ages so what’s the problem with all these whinging hippies?

At 7am on the Tuesday morning, I stand on deck 4 as we pass the stretch of ocean where Rebecca went missing. A school of dolphins leap into the air, doing back-flips. Passengers around me gasp. A young crew member from Ireland passes and I ask her about life in the crew cabins. “It’s like being inside Harry Potter’s closet,” she replies. She means it’s magical, but tiny and dark.

The American writer John Hodgman has devised a party game. It’s called ‘Invisibility or Flight?’ If you could have just one of those two superpowers which would you choose? The right answer is flight. People who choose flight have got nothing to hide. They are selfless, confident and unashamed. People who choose invisibility are basically deceitful, voyeuristic, fearful, crouching perverts.

I would choose invisibility.

What is water? It’s a difficult question because water is impossible to describe. One might ask the same about birds. What are birds? We just don’t know.

I do sympathise. I really do. I think it’s very easy to get into the situation you’ve got yourself into. Well, not very easy, because it does involve a huge amount of lying and spending 2.2 million dollars on houses you haven’t seen. But it’s sort of metaphorically easy to get into the kind of pickle that you’re in.

The coffee and the camembert and the wine and the brandy swirl toxically inside my now churning stomach. I stumble back to the hotel and to bed. At 3.56am I awake with a confused shriek, grab my notepad and scrawl, “3.56 am. Hair triangle horse chest”, and then fall asleep again. I do not know what “hair triangle horse chest” means.
